The play of reflected light and texture features strongly in the work of Nigel Bates. Brightly coloured flowers, abstracts and figurative work, contrast with other pieces using clear resin.

Nigel has been involved with the Creative Arts for over 20 years, setting up and running Artifex contemporary art gallery. During this time, he has developed his own work, experimenting with a mixture of different media and materials along the way.

“I have always been impressed with how fine art painters capture light with paint and wanted to do this in my own work. Over a period of time and experimentation I discovered resin and glass paints, which create a wonderful reflection when hit by light.

The process involved can be likened to mixing oil and water; the reaction of colours when introduced to each other can result in them taking on their own form. With practice I am now able to control the result but the work can still surprise me during the drying process.”

The glass paintings are multi-layered, facilitating light to shine through and project colour and shadows onto the back panel, creating a further layer of depth and a sense of three-dimensionality to the work.
