I like to explore the banal notions of style and glamour, conformity and non conformity

Using the colours and slickness associated with advertising, Sara Pope creates highly original powerful paintings. Her seductive, bold and beautiful prints raise important questions about the ideals of beauty and the transience of celebrity culture.

With a background in the fashion and magazine industries, Sara Pope spent a number of years as a shoe designer. Beauty, consumerism and the media are now major themes within her art, with her ‘Lips’ series imitating the gloss of high end fashion magazines, whilst provocatively subverting its themes.

Born in Stoke on Trent, Sara Pope graduated from Leeds University in Mathematics. Following her Diploma in fashion footwear she began painting independently in 2009, with no formal art training her painting, in subject matter; colour palette and technique reflect her experience working within the fashion industry.

Sara Pope believes the media and consumerism are very powerful, in shaping our beliefs and assumptions, more perhaps than we realise. It is this power of advertising that she attempts to replicate in her artwork.
