Original Artwork - Mixed Media on Wooden Panel
Nostalgia is a strange lens. It softens, edits, and distorts, pulling us back into what was at the expense of what is and what might be.
I’ve been thinking about the role nostalgia plays in my own work, and how much of my visual language is borrowed from the past. Those influences are part of me, but I’m becoming more interested in what I do with them.
How can I acknowledge what came before without being held by it? How can the familiar become something new?
“Remember To Forget” is about that tension.

Artist
Sandro Gebert creates paintings and sculptures that explore perception, the distance between what we see and what we believe. Figures and symbols are altered, obscured and remade until they are no longer fully identifiable, yet still feel familiar. His work investigates how little information an image needs before the viewer begins filling in the rest themselves.
Working primarily in acrylic on wood panel, Sandro Gebert builds paintings through addition and subtraction, pulling paint across the surface, scraping it back, and leaving behind drips, scratches and traces of earlier decisions. Some images emerge clearly while others remain partly withheld. The surface becomes a record of what has been added, lost, concealed and reconsidered. A predominantly black-and-white palette, interrupted by bursts of colour, keeps the imagery direct while allowing the surface to remain richly complex.
His sculptures carry the same questions into three dimensions. They occupy space, change as the viewer moves around them, create negative space and shadow, and encourage a more physical relationship with the artwork. The viewer is no longer simply interpreting an image; they are sharing space with it.
Symbols fascinate Sandro Gebert because they can communicate before language, yet their meaning shifts depending on the individual experiencing them. Rather than resolving into a single interpretation, his work remains open-ended, inviting viewers to bring their own experiences and perspectives to each piece. It feels familiar enough to draw you in, yet intriguing enough to stay with you long after you've left it.
The shapes are simple. The meanings are not.
